A Comprehensive Look at Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from your eye to your brain. This is usually due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). When the optic nerve is damaged, it can cause vision loss and blindness.

There are two main types of glaucoma:

  1. Open-angle glaucoma: The most common type of glaucoma that develops slowly over time and often has no symptoms in the early stages.
  2. Angle-closure glaucoma: A less common type of glaucoma that can develop suddenly and cause severe pain, redness, and vision loss.

Identifying The Risk Factors

The risk factors for glaucoma include:

  • Individuals over 60
  • A genetic predisposition
  • Ethnicity (African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians)
  • Diabetes and heart disease
  • Previous eye injuries
  • Thin corneas
  • Elevated eye pressure

Glaucoma testing typically includes a comprehensive eye exam and measuring your eye pressure. Our testing is thorough and precise, ensuring an accurate diagnosis. We employ advanced techniques to manage eye pressure effectively.

There are two main types of glaucoma laser surgery:

Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT).

  1. ALT was one of the first laser procedures developed and uses an argon laser to treat the drainage angle.
  2. SLT is a newer and more precise form of laser trabeculoplasty and uses a laser that targets specific pigmented cells in the trabecular meshwork, leaving surrounding tissues undisturbed.

Glaucoma laser surgery is typically used when eye drops or other medications fail to control intraocular pressure adequately.

From the initial evaluation to tailored treatment plans, our team guides you with care and commitment. Trust ReFocus Eye Health to be your partner in the fight against glaucoma.
