A Comprehensive Look at Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from your eye to your brain. This is usually due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). When the optic nerve is damaged, it can cause vision loss and blindness.

There are two main types of glaucoma:

  1. Open-angle glaucoma: The most common type of glaucoma that develops slowly over time and often has no symptoms in the early stages.
  2. Angle-closure glaucoma: A less common type of glaucoma that can develop suddenly and cause severe pain, redness, and vision loss.

Unlike traditional surgeries, MIGS is minimally invasive, leading to quicker recovery and fewer complications. During MIGS, tiny devices like microstents are placed in the eye's natural drainage system to improve the outflow of aqueous humor, the fluid that maintains eye pressure. By enhancing this natural drainage, MIGS surgeries effectively lower IOP.

Also known as laser trabeculoplasty, laser surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat open-angle glaucoma. During the surgery, a focused beam of light is applied to the eye's drainage angle. This helps to improve the outflow of aqueous humor, reducing IOP.

There are two main types of glaucoma laser surgery:

Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT).

  1. ALT was one of the first laser procedures developed and uses an argon laser to treat the drainage angle.
  2. SLT is a newer and more precise form of laser trabeculoplasty and uses a laser that targets specific pigmented cells in the trabecular meshwork, leaving surrounding tissues undisturbed.

Glaucoma laser surgery is typically used when eye drops or other medications fail to control intraocular pressure adequately.
